Four Days, Two Stomachs: A Culinary Endeavor in Thailand

A couple of weeks ago, I visited Thailand with a friend. Although the trip’s main objective was to attend the GUTS World Tour in Bangkok, the short getaway became especially memorable because of all the tasty food we consumed over the four days and three nights. In hindsight, I feel lucky that we got to enjoy such amazing food at the restaurants we randomly picked (but if you want my advice, it's much better to come prepared!).

With that said, let me provide you with a list of restaurants to consider in case you’re planning to go on a similar trip:

What I Ate in Seven-Eleven:

Cold Banana-Chocolate Crepe

At first, this dish tasted really good. The softness of the crepe blended perfectly with the thick layer of cream underneath. It wasn’t as good after the first few bites, however. I could hardly taste the banana and chocolate with all the cream filling my mouth. Still, it was worth eating at least once in a while.

Prepackaged Black Squid Pasta and Instant Boiled Egg

Instant pasta alert! It was comforting, like something I could eat every day. If the minimart here in Jakarta sold this dish, I would make a beeline to stock a few packages.

Just to clarify, the egg was not included in the package. I bought it separately.

Mango Sticky Rice

My friend ordered this mango sticky rice online from Grabfood on our last day in Thailand. We decided that whatever happened, we had to enjoy this obligatory dish at least once during our trip. Although we chose it randomly, we regretted nothing. The coconut milk smelled so good and tasted as amazing as we had imagined, while the mango was so sweet.

What We Ate in Kin.d:

Stir-fried Thai basil and crispy pork with rice and fried egg and egg noodles with wontons and roasted red pork

What a surprise! Both dishes tasted incredibly authentic. I urge you to give this restaurant a try when in Bangkok. Both my friend and I preferred the rice dish more, but if you're a fan of thin egg noodles, you should give it a go.

What We Ate in Yuki Izakaya:

Aburi Salmon Sushi

Well, it might sound like a stretch, but this is one of the best aburi salmon sushi that I have ever tasted in my entire life. I usually like my salmon as raw as possible, but for this one, I will gladly make an exception. So, so good.

What I Ate in Larb Lauren:

Sour sausage bacon rolls, shrimp tom yum with shrimp paste, salmon plara spicy salad, and longan juice

At this restaurant, I realized that while I loved the sourness in both the tom yum and the salad, I wasn't a fan of it in the sausages. It was just a matter of preference though, I assure you, and the bacon tasted amazing. You should totally give this restaurant a try since it has so many mouthwatering dishes on its menu that I haven't gotten the chance to enjoy.

What I Ate in Pasta Ama:

Spaghetti spicy carbonara with scallops and shrimp eggs

Please read this with Joey Tribbiani's voice when reviewing Rachel Green's infamous Thanksgiving trifle: "Scallops? Goooood. Shrimp eggs? Tasted like smaller tobiko, therefore goooood. Spicy carbonara pasta? So goooood that it managed to taste better and better with each bite." If Joey doesn't share food, I wouldn't want to share this pasta too!

Carrot Cake

This carrot cake might be one of the best I have ever tasted in my entire life. Since I had never eaten one with so many nuts before, how this piece tasted became a very nice surprise. We even got a small jug of yogurt to pair with the carrot cake. Double super yum!

What I Ate in Platinum Mall Food Court:

Pork With Noodles (Stall No. P10 - Pork Leg Egg Noodles)

It might not be my favorite combination of noodles and pork, but dinner here was a quick, good experience to fulfill my craving. I loved that it also came with some pickled mustard greens (in Indonesia, we call it 'sayur asin' or 'salty veggies').

Some Random Ice

It was super sweet (and super cheap)! If I recall correctly, this bowl of ice cost only THB 35. A good option when you're feeling so thirsty.

What I Ate in La Brioche:

Brekkie and Pandan Croissant

If a perfect breakfast exists, then this is it. Everything we ordered here tasted so good that my friend and I couldn't stop complimenting the dish the whole morning. The Brekkie (which included toast, scrambled eggs, pork sausage, bacon, mushrooms, and vegetables) had the best pork sausage ever, and there were NO WORDS to describe how amazing the Pandan Croissant (with bits of coconuts and coconuts ice cream) was. Writing this makes me want to go back there immediately.

What I Ate in Icon Siam Food Court:

Salmon Cuts with Thai Sauce

Hands downthe best salmon I have ever tasted! The salmon was so fresh that it felt like it melted in my mouth, and the sauce was definitely perfection. It was a little spicy, but me likey.
