Ep. 1 - A Day In My Life (Blog Edition)
Navigating your mid-twenties can be hard and challenging, but I believe that adulting doesn't mean you have to overstress everything. If you still constantly murmur, "But... but... my friends have achieved everything in their twenty-five..." please be kind to yourself and stop. Life is not a competition, remember? You may be here while they may be there. We all have our own pace to thread and celebrate.
So, in the spirit of celebrating life, I'm considering doing a series of 'A Day in My Life (Blog Edition)'. Since I have no talent whatsoever in making vlogs, I plan on sharing some random days of my life in a collage of blog posts as a reminder that even the little things can be romanticized too... like how I romanticized a slow morning on a random Saturday on this very first episode.
I mean, how could I not romanticize it? I woke up at 7 a.m. to my favorite toy bolster pillow yesterday. My sister, whom I live with in Jakarta, was going on a hike with her colleagues, so I temporarily had our room for myself.
Just so you know, I don't normally skip breakfast—I always consider it very vital. Being alone on a Saturday got me an attitude, however. After five days of preparing my own packed brekkie to bring to work, skipping it on the weekend didn't feel like a big deal. I just grabbed some random snacks to chew on.
So breakfast time, or the lack thereof, was quick. After brushing my teeth and doing my skincare routine, I decided to do some Netflix and chill. Since I had not finished watching Sex and The City (the series) yet, I dedicated my morning to the famous quartet: Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha.
Well, I'm currently on Season 3 Episode 9. Just met Aidan. He seems like a much better guy than Big. I mean, let's be real: Big is one of the worst male love interests to ever exist...
Team Carrie and Big, please don't judge me.
Anyway. Watching movies didn't fill my stomach. Nor did the random snack that I had eaten earlier. I started to get hungry at around 10. Since it was super hot outside, I wasn't too keen on dining out. I decided to get food delivery instead. My choice fell on the other comfort food of mine: stir-fried flat rice noodles with beef and gravy sauce (in Indonesian we call it kwetiau siram sapi) from Kwetiau 28 AHo.
For your information, this kwetiau is my go-to dish every time I'm not feeling well. And since I wasn't feeling my best these past few days, this hot comforting dish was what this situation called for. Even if I much preferred the seafood version, this one satisfied me regardless:
Well, it might have been a soothing slow morning so far, but I was feeling like doing something productive too. With a strong will (but mostly my wireless mouse), I force-closed the Netflix tab and began to work on my blog. For all I knew, blog posts didn't just appear out of thin air. I had gotta go back to work. But a little selfie first didn't hurt, so...
For as long as I remember, writing has been the main outlet for both my emotions and energies. In metaphors, I write things I can't speak about. And I feel like it keeps me sane sometimes.
But see, I was so caught up in writing that I forgot how the clock didn't stop ticking that day. It was almost 2 p.m. and I had only taken a shower. Recovering from my shock, I quickly did my makeup and hair while listening to the emails i can't send fwd: album by Sabrina Carpenter. It had been a while since I had last heard the album in one go. I missed the vibes.
A confession to make: I had initially wanted to do a side-by-side before-after makeup picture in similar natural lighting, but since I had to meet some friends and was already running late, I had to settle with this incomparable comparison.
Left: Just woke up and took a selfie in (good) natural lighting. I had just finished my period so it was still acne season (you could barely see the blemishes in the picture, but, ooooh, trust me they're there).
Right: Just went down the stairs rather quickly because I was late and took a selfie in (whatever) natural lighting. I always aim for a no-makeup makeup look because I believe that in makeup less is more. I want the products to enhance my features, not to change them.
At around 4 p.m., I was on my way to the MRT station.
The contrast between how hot it was outside and how cold it was in the MRT was stark. Sitting on the train for 20 minutes hindered the sweat, but wandering around Blok M to find something to eat for dinner with my friends... there was no help for that.
After quite the search, our group decided to try a Bataknese restaurant called Lapo Dainang in the basement of Blok M Square. I ordered the first menu package consisting of a plate of rice, Batak-style roasted pork, saksang pork, and cassava leaves.
Dish #1 - Batak-style Roasted Pork
Dish #2 - Saksang Pork
Dish #3 - Cassava Leaves
After we were all full, we went to M Bloc Space to buy some snacks. I was parched, so I bought a glass of fresh orange juice. It tasted like sugar though...
In retrospect, I think it was probably what I needed to boost my energy for another bout of walking. After not knowing what to do anymore, our group decided to end the night with a 2-hour session of karaoke.
It was kinda random but fun.
Thank you for reading all that.
